W. Bruce Cameron is the New York Times bestselling author of several books, including 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, which was turned into the hit ABC series.

He has twice received the National Society of Newspaper Columnists’ award for Best Humor Columnist, and his weekly nationally syndicated column is published in more than 50 newspapers. His website is www.brucecameron.com and www.adogspurpose.com

Bruce’s newest, most wonderful book for all us animal lovers, titled: A Dog’s Purpose – a novel for humans, was the focus of this week’s interview.

This wonderful book is the remarkable story of one endearing dog’s search for his purpose over the course of several life times. More than just another charming dog story, A Dog’s Purpose touches on the universal quest for an answer to life’s most basic question: Why are we here?

You’ll get answers to these questions:

  • Why do we adopt dogs knowing they will most likely die before we do?
  • What if your dog never dies? What if dogs live multiple lifetimes, and remembers all of them?
  • What if every animal has a purpose, and your pet’s purpose is intimately bound to yours?
  • Why do so many people say the book A Dog’s Purpose gives them comfort when they’ve lost a pet?
  • What makes the narrative voice in A Dog’s Purpose (the dog), different from other books that have been written from a dog’s perspective?
  • There are so, so many books out there with a dog on the cover.  Why has this one been so successful?  Are you surprised at its success?

A Dog’s Purpose is ultimately uplifting and redeeming and full of joy and hope. www.adogspurpose.com is a place where you can purchase a copy of the book for yourself, or win a free book!  Just upload a picture of you dog by nominating your pet for dog of the week.  You may also contact Bruce Cameron at www.adogspurpose.com.

Yes, they do. Do you know what it is?

Without communicating with them directly, it can be hard to tell for sure. But I promise you they do in fact have a reason for being on the planet and for being in your life.

All of us have a choice about who we want to be with. At some level, we chose our parents and family even if we decide later to break some or all of those family ties.

We choose our friends based on who we resonate with, who best supports us or challenges us to learn our life lessons. Even the most obnoxious person is there for a reason. They also have a purpose and are helping us on some level to evolve.

I believe we travel in Soul Packs. Certain souls are connected with us at various points during our lives for many reasons. Like actors in a living, holographic movie, we play specific and changing roles for each other as we grow and evolve.

When we look into past lives, we can discover instances where we’ve been together before playing different roles in that lifetime. And sometimes we carry those roles forward into this life, along with the wounds, traumas and anything else that’s unresolved.

Our animals are not always free to choose who they want to be with. Many relationship, health and behavior problems in animals stem from the fact that they’re not with the right person or family. That leaves them feeling unfulfilled and frustrated.

It’s important to recognize your animal’s purpose, to honor it, and to find a way to help them fulfill it but only if you want them and yourself to be happy.

I’m delighted to share W. Bruce Cameron, syndicated columnist and author of a bestselling book, A Dog’s Purpose, this week on The Real Dr Doolittle Show. His heartwarming story will inspire you and his book is a real gem.

Written by Bruce Cameron, author of “A Dog’s Purpose.”

To: Master of the house
From: Dog
Subject: Cat

Master:

The cat is despicable. She doesn’t do any tricks and never comes when you call and I’ve been there and I know she can hear you. We need to face facts: It is time to get rid of the cat.

Before the cat’s arrival, meals were very festive times. I would sit and stare attentively at your lips, trembling slightly and drooling. You would play the game of pretending to be cross and demand that I leave the area, but whenever you cooked dinner your children would slip me food under the table.

Now, though, the cat is allowed to jump on the table—actually physically walk on the table! You don’t yell at the cat, you just pick her up and put her back on the floor, and I know you don’t see it but she always gives me a haughty look as she walks past me.

And speaking of meals, I have always been satisfied to eat the gritty pellets of meat by-products you bring home in the giant bags, right? Have I ever once, ever, failed to finish a meal? But now I find out that the cat is being served lobster and salmon and crab—and she never consumes all of it! This means there are little containers of delectable snacks lying around and how can I be blamed for making sure they get eaten? Why do you get so mad? As long as the pet food is going to the pets, isn’t that what is important?

Then there is play time. I think we can clearly see that I am a big dog, descended from a noble line of hunters accustomed to chasing prey and attacking it. Haven’t I nearly managed to take down a few cars as they’ve driven past the house? The cat is about the size of a squirrel and in my view should behave like one, but when I attempt to chase her, she hunches up and spits at me! This cannot be sanitary. And shouldn’t she be declawed? I’m very concerned about the potential for damage to the furniture plus my nose.

Speaking of sanitation, do you realize that the cat goes to the bathroom in the house? And not in the drinking basins like you do, but in a sandbox in the basement. What are we going to say if some woman brings her baby over to play in the sandbox and the cat has been using it as a toilet? I used to police the thing for you, but you put it up out of my reach for some reason.

I’m not the only one who feels the cat is an evil person. Here is a note from the hamster:

To: Master of the house
From: Hamster
Subject: Cat

Please tell cat to stop staring at me while I work.

Signed, Hamster, Department of Rodent Wheels

I also tried to get a note from the fish, but apparently it believes that everything happening outside its bowl is some kind of reality TV show.

I don’t understand why the cat is allowed up on the bed and I’m not. I am far more cuddly than any stupid cat. I think her purring sounds unhealthy and may be a sign of tuberculosis. And why doesn’t she ever get a bath? She smells like saliva from licking her paws—you’d never catch me licking such ridiculous places. I often smell wonderful from rolling in road kill, yet you give me baths all the time!

And speaking of sleeping, sometimes I will be taking a nap and she’ll come right up and lie down beside me. Usually I’m too tired to do anything about it, but then later the other dogs smell her on me and crack a lot of jokes at my expense.

So, not to exaggerate, but the cat has brought the family to complete ruin. I’m sorry I’ve got to be the one to bring it to your attention, but now that I have I think we can all agree that we should go back to the way it was, when I was the number-one pet.

Yours truly,

The Dog

Our dogs have never consumed so much water in their lives. They literally line up at the counter when we are filling their bowl and then line up to get a drink as well. If they are not in the kitchen and they hear the water filling they come in shortly after. Their coats have become extremely thick. We are in the Sacramento area so given our hot summers, we know it is not a weather related change! We use the Beauty Water as well after bathing that leaves their coats in great shape and helps repel dirt.

Our Bull Mastiff definitely has more energy and is more playful since drinking Kangen waterâ„¢. As for the Lab and the Golden, for those of you who know these breeds I was hoping that maybe Kangen Waterâ„¢ would have the opposite effect though no luck!! (ok, that was a joke) These two also have a tremendous amount of energy. I also own a horse that drinks Kangen Waterâ„¢!

By Robert Brooks, PhD

When my boss handed back the draft of an article I had edited, it was covered with blue ink — his many questions, corrections and redirections. Here’s what went through my head…

1. Oh no! I must stink as an editor. I should quit.
2. If he’d stop being so darn fussy, my job would be so much easier.
3. Still, I’m not really surprised. He often has lots of comments.
4. Let me see where I went wrong so I don’t make the same mistakes again. If I can’t figure it out, I’ll ask him to explain.
5. Anyway, I shouldn’t feel bad — he praised the article I edited yesterday. And, overall, I love my job.
6. What the heck, I’ll have some fun by using this anecdote in the article I just started working on — which, appropriately enough, is about resilience.

In those few moments, my mind touched on several of the main points that Harvard Medical School psychologist Robert Brooks, PhD, covers in his book The Power of Resilience. Since my first thoughts had been decidedly nonresilient (though I came around in the end), I was glad for the opportunity to discuss the topic with Dr. Brooks.

“A resilient person has a mind-set — assumptions or expectations about herself — that allows her to bounce back after encountering obstacles. She adopts a problem-solving approach instead of languishing in feelings of helplessness and hopelessness,” Dr. Brooks explained. “Even if you don’t have a resilient mind-set now, you can develop one, because mind-sets are not chiseled in stone. There are guideposts you can follow and activities you can engage in that strengthen a resilient mind-set and lead to a more fulfilling life.” What to do…

Tell yourself that adversity is an expected part of life — a challenge to face and grow from, not evidence that you are a failure. When you do catch yourself getting into a negative mind-set (I’m stupid, this task is impossible), making a list of your strengths or thinking about a time you were successful dealing with a difficult situation can help adjust your attitude.

Learn from your mistakes — and successes. Here’s an exercise to practice at any time but especially when you have just experienced a setback and feel defeated. Think about a situation in which you made an error. Write down what you could have done differently to get a better outcome… and what you will do next time a similar situation arises. Now remember a time when you faced a tough situation and handled it well. Make a list of the coping strategies you used… and consider how to apply those strategies to a current challenge.

Focus your efforts on factors over which you have personal control — instead of feeling powerless and resentful over things you cannot control (such as another person’s behavior). Example: Suppose you feel unfulfilled at work. If you sit around waiting for your boss to offer more interesting assignments or stewing about the lousy economy that prevents you from getting a better job, you will fall prey to a “victim’s mentality” and not develop a resilient mind-set… and your situation won’t improve. Instead, figure out what you can control and work on that — for instance, by sending out your resume or telling the boss, “I’m excited about Project X, and here’s how I could contribute to it.” Although your boss may not agree, at least you are taking a more active approach and will have a better idea of how receptive your boss will be to your ideas.

Ask for help… and give help, too. Resilience does not mean toughing it out alone. Look for resources that will help bring about a desired change, and willingly accept assistance when it’s offered. Also remember to display compassion and support for others. This creates a “helper’s high” that connects you with others… and reinforces the belief that you can make a positive difference in the world, which is a key component of a resilient mind-set.

What a day today was at the Kentucky Horse Park. A tiny nick in a horse’s tongue caused a major catastrophe in the career of one of the world’s rising star riders. As the Dutch vet pointed out, it only takes one drop of blood to turn a vial of water bright red; likewise, it takes only one drop of blood to turn a horse’s saliva red.

And so it was that the Ground Jury was compelled to ring the bell and halt the high-scoring performance of The Netherlands’ Adelinde Cornelissen on Jerich Parzival. The cut stopped bleeding instantly, but the damage was done. It’s a welfare issue, and Adelinde was disqualified from further competition.

People joke and say that there are more veterinarians here than there are horses. They may be correct. There are event vets, FEI vets, State of Kentucky vets, regulatory vets, quarantine vets, team vets and even sometimes personal vets for the horses, even though they have team vets.

And let’s not forget the sponsor vets. Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital is just down the road, and they are providing the event veterinarians as well as access to their facility if it is needed.

But Rood and Riddle’s sponsorship goes a step further. As the official veterinary hospital of the Games and a key sponsor of the entire event, Rood and Riddle had a key opportunity to use their position in educational ways. Their “show and tell” exhibit about the technology and the services available at the hospital allows visitors to wander through the exhibits while having staff nearby to answer questions and explain equipment or horseshoes.

Horseshoes? Yes, the hospital built a shallow-drawered vertical case to display therapeutic horseshoes used in the hospital’s podiatry clinic. Ultrasound and radiography are featured, but you know that the crowd stopper will be the colic surgery!

The pavilion, which is located in a neighborhood called the Alltech Experience, has a theater where lectures and demonstrations will be going on throughout the Games. There is no charge to attend any of the events in the Alltech Experience, including Rood and Riddle’s lectures.

I confess, I’ve been nutty about animals my whole life.

When I changed my career from a marketing research and business consultant, it was because I was tired of the 9-5 corporate world, I hated going to work in the morning, and couldn’t leave the office soon enough. My health suffered, and I was deeply depressed much of the time. I was very clear that my life’s purpose and hearts passion lay in a different direction all together.

I wanted to make the 4 letter word WORK into something more resembling LOVE and resonating with PLAY!

I wanted to spend my life doing something I truly love and know I’m making a big difference in the world by helping heal animals and their people… Can you relate?

Animals bring me joy, they touch my heart, they have even helped save my life. They’ve helped me heal, to grow spiritually and they’ve played a large role in making me the human being I am today.

I know they’ve touched your heart too, so we can all be proud to be crazy critter ladies and gents! Our Mission? Changing our world one animal at a time…

I’m delighted to share Kelly Meister, THE Crazy Critter Lady this week on The Real Dr Doolittle Show.

“My pet is a member of my family.”

Millions of people say such things about the animals that give them companionship, comfort, loyalty and unlimited love and affection. But what happens when:

* A beloved pet starts acting strange and out-of-character?

* For no apparent reason your sweet dog (or other furry friend) turns violent, fierce, disobedient and dangerous?

* Your four-legged family member seems to hear or see “something” no one else can detect?

* Other animals are obviously scared of your pet, and keep their distance?

* Your pet acts fearful around religious ministers or holy objects such as a cross or Bible?

* Along with the arrival of a new pet the family starts experiencing unexplained events, bizarre accidents, or a
noticeable streak of bad luck or other difficulties?

It is quite possible that your animal companion could be possessed, and under the control of negative forces!

If this is the case, with every day that goes by your entire family is put in more and more danger and experiences more and more stress. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones (including the pet!) to know these facts:

1. Paranormal pets are not that uncommon. Chances are YOU know of an animal (in your own household, or some else’s) that has exhibited strange or even unnatural behavior.

2. When a pet becomes uncontrollable or “spooky,” many families mistakenly remove that troubled animal to a shelter — where, sadly, it will probably be euthanized. This is NOT the best recourse.

3. Thousands more animals are abandoned, mistreated, neglected and destroyed because the owners are confused about the situation.

4. These animals are not at fault. It becomes necessary for you, the pet owner, to investigate the background of your pet, and to seek protection for both the human and non-human members of the family.

You cannot ignore this!

More Information for people who love their pets and want to learn about ‘animal possession’ is in my book “Paranormal Pooch: A True Story of the Dog Who Healed One Family.”

Many paranormal investigators believe that an animal does, indeed, have a soul and is capable of showing emotion. Otherwise the creature with whom we share our homes would be an empty shell.

Just as dogs are especially vigilant to guard our homes and property, they can also be very attuned to spiritual activity within our dwelling places. Dogs can sense and see poltergeists, ghosts, even angels. Long before human beings notice something different — such as unexplained flickering of lights, strange odors or misty forms — a dog will likely respond. This makes the animal a tempting target to invasion (possession) by such spirits.

Just as you would protect your spouse and children from a physical intruder (armed robber, angry bees, nest of rodents, etc.), you must find a way to protect the entire household from spiritual intrusions. And you must include your beloved dog in this protection.

Countless families now use the well-documented Energy Shield, a device that supports and balances your body’s own magnetic field, while protecting you from the negative energy generated by many aspects of our environment. The pendant, which increases the energy level of your natural life-force, is worn as a necklace (or placed within a handbag or wallet) or as a pet‘s collar charm. As we live in a constant sea of electromagnetic radiation, the Shield also protects us from computers, microwaves, cell phones, radio and TV transmission, and other electrical devices. You are also made safer from the harmful thoughts and emotions of negative people and (of course) you and your at-risk pet will be shielded from the presence of negative spirits. The Energy Shield is available at: www.TheEnergyShield.com

A friend of mine recently called and was sharing his new knowledge that — Surprise! Did I know Doctors have NO training in Nutrition?

How is this possible, he asked? How can they attempt to help fix my body when they don’t even understand the difference between calcium carbonate and limestone, know that zinc is necessary for wound healing, or that antibiotics must always be followed with Probiotics?

Another friend, a mid-wife, contacted me recently about her daughter-in-law who refused to give her baby (just home from 7 weeks in the ICU) any probiotics! Why? Because the doctor did not prescribe them! Seven weeks on antibiotics and no one had prescribed probiotics to a new-born!

Doctors have extremely limited exposure to the study of foods, vitamins, enzymes, herbs, minerals and all the wonders that our body can do on its own when helped out a bit. They know the names and some basic functions of vitamins and minerals, but that’s about it…..

Even worse, there is NO medical specialty that trains people in the therapeutic use of food, vitamins, herbs, etc. I am a CCN – Certified Clinical Nutritionist – and we have to have supplemental training to learn all this, as it is not taught in school. We are then tested and certified by our governing body.

The Nutritionists and Dieticians generally have limited study of this too. They are more oriented towards feeding hospital patients or schools, how to buy and prepare bulk foods for economy, or maybe how to administer IV nutrition to patients who cannot eat.

So what are doctors learning?

Doctors study emergencies and diseases. They learn to name things, and to call this group of symptoms that name. And then what? Well, the pharmaceutical companies have pretty much bought their way into the medical schools, and they teach, either directly by “sponsoring” a professor, or indirectly, by providing textbook funding with their names on it, etc.

When you go to a conference and the bus that picks you up at the hotel looks like “the little purple pill”, you know where the money is for sure.

There are three or four naturopathic medical schools in the United States. Doctors from there are known as Naturopathic Physicians. They are only allowed to practice medicine in a fraction of the US. They take all the normal course work of a regular medical school, plus extensive training in Integrative Medicine.

Unfortunately, Texas will never allow them to practice here. Our ever-powerful TMA (Texas Medical Association) will see to that, so people have to learn on their own how to eat, and how to organize a supplement program that is helpful. And they can find the CCN’s who are scattered all over the US, including Texas.

I have great admiration for the few physicians who spend their “free” time and money seeking answers in the Naturopathic field. They have a difficult path to negotiate, and often are put down by their colleagues.

In any event, everything you do to learn another piece of your health puzzle will pay off for you. Let the learning continue for a lifetime, and pass on your knowledge to others. Including your doctors. The more they hear about vitamin therapies and herbs that help you, the more they get a look into our world! Spread the word!! And always do your own research before and after you see a doctor.

By Smoochie the Cat and Dr. Signe Dayhoff

I’ve polled my fellow felines and the consensus is that there are telltale signs that suggest one or the other.

If we’re playing, there won’t be any ongoing growling, yowling, or screaming. We may hiss once, possible twice, but that will be it. We won’t continue hissing.

If we’re playing, no one will purposely be hurt. That is, unless there is an accident, there will be no scratching or biting and fur flying everywhere.

If we’re playing, we will take turns being on the offensive and defensive. If we’re fighting, one of us will staying on the offensive and the other, alas, will be on the defensive. Playing is a matter of turn-taking, like human speakers in a conversation.

If we’re playing, we’ll resume our normal behavior after the tussle. If we’re fighting, you can see that we’re avoiding one another and appearing afraid and standoffish.

When you’re not sure what is going on, especially between two cats who don’t normally interact with one another, you might try to distract them in a positive way.

Since they might be playing and getting to know each other, you don’t want to do anything negative, like splashing them with water or using an air horn. If they are creating a budding friendship, you don’t want to interfere with it.

So you can create a positive sound, something they associate with having a yummy or play with you. If a jingle bell suggests catnip, you could make a loud jingling sound. If opening a can of cat food or tuna it to grab their attention.

Whatever you do, do not try to physically separate them. If they are fighting, you and/or they could be harmed as well as add to their aggression level if they are fighting.

In a fighting situation, your splashing them with water or making a loud noise can be helpful.

Just look for the signs to be more sure they are really fighting and not playing.
