Bet you didn’t know that I’m a Ghost Buster…  It’s true!

I don’t talk about it much but I’ve done a lot of work with entities with great results.

Because my specialty is in resolving problems, as you can see, this critically important work sometimes takes me to many interesting, unexpected and fascinating places.

Ever notice your animal staring off into space like they’re watching something you can’t see?  Or reacting oddly to a certain area for no known reason?

That’s because animals do in fact see ghosts.  They can sense and see ‘dead people’.

I’m always amazed and intrigued when a consultation takes a spooky turn and I find myself communicating with a deceased loved one or a lost soul who can’t find their way home.

For instance, one German Shepherd told me that there was a young man’s spirit floating through the walls at odd times and it was very scary for him.  He was trying his best to protect his person but all the spirit did was laugh at him.

His person of course thought her beloved dog had lost his mind!  He was viciously attacking and reacting to something she could not see or sense.

Once the dog told us his story, I shifted my focus to address the spirit and we found a way to help him get home.  Once he left, the dog returned to the loving, happy furrkid he truly was and all was well again.

A dressage horse told me that there was a Native American Indian in the far corner of his practice arena and that he’d been warned away from that area.  Nothing his rider could do would change his mind about it, and that was that.

In order to solve the problem, I had to connect with the Indian who turned out to be a guardian of the ancient sacred burial grounds that happened to be located on this property. When I told my client what I’d discovered, she confirmed that in fact, that was true.

We found a way to respectfully negotiate an agreement so that the horses could go into that area for their exercise and practice, and all was well.

When you learn how to really HEAR your animals yourselves, a whole new amazing world opens up.  And it’s tons of fun and not really scary at all, I promise.

I know you’ll enjoy The Real Dr Doolittle Show interview with Olga Horvat about her remarkable story which she wrote about in her book, Paranormal Pooch.  I had a blast interviewing her.

Hope you and your furrkids have a safe and Happy Halloween.

Much love,

Val

(CBS) Scented laundry detergent and dryer sheets make laundry smell great – but do they cause cancer?

A small study suggests scented laundry items contain carcinogens that waft through vents, potentially raising cancer risk.

“This is an interesting source of pollution because emissions from dryer vents are essentially unregulated,” said lead author Dr. Anne Steinemann, professor of civil and environmental engineering and of public affairs at the University of Washington, said in a written statement. “If they’re coming out of a smokestack or tail pipe, they’re regulated, but if they’re coming out of a dryer vent, they’re not.”

Previous studies have looked at what chemicals are released by laundry products, since manufacturers don’t have to disclose ingredients used in fragrances or laundry products.

Needless to say, these researchers weren’t thrilled with what they found.

For the study – published in the August issue of Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health – researchers enlisted two homeowners to volunteer their washers and dryers, which the team scrubbed clean beforehand. The researchers ran a regular laundry cycle for three scenarios in each home: once without any detergent, once with a scented liquid laundry detergent, and the last with both scented detergent and a leading brand of scented dryer sheets.

Their analysis found more than 25 “volatile” air pollutants – including the carcinogens acetaldehyde and benzene.

Benzene causes leukemia and other blood cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. Acetaldehyde has been shown to cause nasal and throat cancer in animal studies.

Steinemann thinks agencies focus too much on limiting other pollution sources when they should look closer to home.

“We focus a lot of attention on how to reduce emissions of pollutants from automobiles,” she said. “And here’s one source of pollutants that could be reduced.”

The American Cleaning Institute, however, Steinemann’s study, calling the findings “shoddy science” that didn’t take into account many factors like washing machine brands, different load cycles, and non-scented products.

“Consumers should not be swayed by the sensationalist headlines that may come across the Internet related to this so-called research,” the Institute emailed CBS News.

Diet affects every aspect of your dog’s physical and mental well-being. When your dog eats low-quality food and treats, he’s not just consuming empty calories, which packs on pounds; his body is being robbed of the building blocks necessary to maintain good health, energy and an upbeat attitude. Feeding good quality food and treats helps keep Fido’s waistline in check and increase his quality and quantity of life.

Your dog can’t read labels or ask questions; he’s relying on you to make intelligent choices for him. Once you learn to decipher labels, you may be surprised or shocked at what you see.

For instance, the length of the ingredient list doesn’t always indicate the quality of the food. A protein from a specified animal should be the first ingredient. Avoid generic proteins such as “meat” or “poultry.” Although dogs like to eat some of the animal parts we don’t, proteins from a specified animal are better than byproducts. Likewise, byproducts are better than rendered meals.

Always buy the best food you can afford. When a manufacturer uses cheap ingredients, it has to bulk up the food with fillers to meet the government’s minimum nutritional requirements. As a result, the portion size for cheap food is typically larger than for more-expensive food with higher-quality, more-digestible ingredients.

In the end, you’ll be buying more of the cheaper food, which usually works out to be more expensive than buying the higher-quality food in the first place. Just as with humans, obesity is a growing problem for dogs. Limit table scraps; they’re fattening, and some human food, such as chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, bones and Xylitol, is dangerous for dogs.

“Dogs are my favorite role models. I want to work like a dog, doing what I was born to do with joy and purpose. I want to play like a dog, with total, jolly abandon. I want to love like a dog, with unabashed devotion and complete lack of concern about what people do for a living, how much money they have, or how much they weigh. The fact that we still live with dogs, even when we don't have to herd or hunt our dinner, gives me hope for humans and canines alike.”

― Oprah Winfrey

Oh, The Real Dr Doolittle Show (podcast) fun just keeps getting better and better!  My guest this week is fellow dog lover Oprah Winfrey’s own preferred pet stylist, Billy Rafferty.

He’s the owner of the Doggy Dooz Salon, and is the author of Happy Dog: Caring For Your Dog’s Body Mind and Spirit, which is featured on www.Oprah.com.

In addition to being wonderfully fun and entertaining, Billy is also the preferred pet stylist for many other celebrities, including celebrity chef Art Smith and actress Joan Cusack.

Now, for Einstein’s News!

I haven’t given you an update on my best friend and furrkid, Einstein, in a while.  Thought you might like to know how he’s doing.

You may recall that just last December he got suddenly got incredibly sick.  By Christmas, he was in the final stages of renal failure.

The tests showed that he had leptospirosus, rocky mountain spotted tick fever, Lyme disease, and several other nasties.  It was incredible and completely overwhelming.  Didn’t even seem possible that a young 20 month old dog could have all that happen to him at once, but there it was in his test results.

After 16 days of intensive care, plus 3 months of intensive antibiotics and ongoing IV fluids, I finally said enough allopathic medicine, this is not helping him get well.  And I decided to bring him home.

His BUN and creatinine levels were still off the charts high, and it was a risky move.

I consulted with the amazing Dr Arthur Young who I had the privilege of interviewing for the podcast Show, and he started us on a new course of holistic treatment.

Kangen water, homemade food, supplements, BodyTalk, Reiki, Bach Flowers and Dr Arthur Young’s homeopathic protocol have made a HUGE difference in his health and well-being.

We just went in for a checkup and new blood work and the results are truly amazing.  Our first vet didn’t think his kidneys would ever recover and that we’d be doing frequent fluids flushing for the rest of what would likely be a short life.

However, according to his new labwork, his levels are now normal!

I know you understand the heartache of knowing your furr friend is ill and perhaps dying.  It’s like living with an ongoing tragedy that you try desperately to stop, and sometimes we get lucky and find the right course of action.  And sometimes it’s simply time to let them go and grieve….

I’m so grateful he’s still with me, and we have more time left together.  I intend to make the most of it, and to treasure every moment.

Our experience reminds me every day not to take things for granted.  The gifts we have today may not be there tomorrow.

Please take a moment to offer gratitude to your furrkids.  Let them feel your love, know how much they mean to you, and what a difference they make in your life.

And if you’re ready to go that extra step to:

* Learn how to hear their voices,

* To know their thoughts,

* To discover what they need to tell you before their time here is done…

…then be sure to join us for the last Animal Communication System Virtual Retreat™ starting November 5th.

Need another reason?  Just look at them… they’re the reason.

Wishing you and your furrkids much love,

Val

Asthmatic children with relatively low vitamin D levels in their blood may have a greater risk of suffering severe asthma attacks than those with higher levels of the vitamin, a new study suggests.

The study, which followed more than 1,000 children with asthma for four years, found those with vitamin-D insufficiency at the outset were more likely to have an asthma attack that required a trip to the hospital. Over the four-year study, 38 percent of children with insufficient vitamin D levels went to the emergency room or were hospitalized for an asthma exacerbation. The same was true of 32 percent of children with sufficient levels of the vitamin.

When the researchers considered other factors  including the severity of the children’s asthma at the study’s start, their weight and their family income  vitamin D insufficiency itself was linked to a 50 percent increase in the risk of severe asthma attacks.

Researchers led by Dr. Augusto A. Litongua, of Harvard Medical School in Boston, report the findings in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology.

As it stands, people are considered to have an overt deficiency in vitamin D when blood levels drop below 11 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). But there is debate over how the optimal vitamin D level should be defined – and what the daily recommended intake of the vitamin should be for children and adults.

Some experts believe that vitamin D blood levels above 30 ng/mL are desirable for overall health, and that levels between deficiency and 30 ng/mL should be viewed as insufficient.

For their study, Litongua and his colleagues considered children with vitamin D levels of 30 ng/mL or lower to be insufficient in the vitamin.

The researchers based their findings on 1,024 children with mild-to-moderate asthma who were part of a clinical trial testing two inhaled asthma medications  budesonide and nedocromil. Using blood samples taken at the start of the trial, Litongua’s team found that 35 percent of the children had vitamin D insufficiency, and 65 percent had sufficient levels.

Overall, the researchers found no evidence that sufficient vitamin D levels protected kids from moderate asthma symptoms; in fact, children with low levels of the vitamin tended to report fewer moderate symptoms.

However, these children were at greater risk of severe asthma attacks.

While the findings point to an association between vitamin D status and asthma exacerbations, they do not prove that vitamin D is responsible — or, by extension, that taking the vitamin will prevent asthma attacks.

It is biologically plausible that vitamin D would affect the severity of asthma attacks, according to Litongua and his colleagues.

Vitamin D may be best known for its role in healthy bone development and maintenance, but it is also needed for normal nerve, muscle and immune system function. Some studies have linked low vitamin D levels to a higher risk of type 1 or “insulin-dependent” diabetes in children and, in adults, heart disease and certain cancers.

The effects of vitamin D on the immune system, which include the inflammatory response to infections, might help explain why higher levels of the vitamin were linked to a lower risk of severe asthma exacerbations, according to Litongua’s team.

They say it’s  also possible that vitamin D enhances the effects of anti-inflammatory steroid hormones  both the body’s natural supply and the synthetic corticosteroids used to treat asthma.

In this study, the beneficial association between vitamin D and asthma attacks was mainly seen in children who were on budesonide, a corticosteroid.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants, children and teenagers get 400 IU of vitamin D each day. Milk, breakfast cereals and orange juice fortified with the vitamin are the main food sources, though some fatty fish naturally contain high amounts of vitamin D. Experts recommend vitamin pills for children who do not get enough of the vitamin from food.

Vitamin D is naturally synthesized in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight, but long winters and sun avoidance in the summer mean that many kids may not get enough vitamin D this way. In addition, vitamin D synthesis is less efficient in people with darker skin, and African Americans are at higher risk of deficiency than whites.

Overweight children and adults also appear to be at elevated risk of deficiency because vitamin D is stored in body fat. The more vitamin D that gets sequestered into fat tissue, the less active vitamin there is in the blood.

In last week’s ezine, I shared that it’s okay to start projects that you don’t feel totally ready for.  Stretching ourselves to reach outside our comfort zones is critically important to our growth and journey.  If you believe you have a mission and purpose on the planet, please know that it is not served well by playing small.

I consider myself an Agent of Change, and because you’re in my world, I know you are also.

You may not know this, but I was absolutely terrified to reach out and try to interview celebrities… but I did it anyway.

I didn’t have any idea what I was doing.  But I had a dream, a vision and a hope that I could do it.

Nobody gave me permission… I didn’t receive an invitation… Honestly, I was terrified to put myself out there.  I felt like a beginning trapeze artist working without a safety net.

I woke up one morning with the idea burning inside me, and I took a deep breath, and I bravely decided not to wait until I was ready.  Almost dizzy with nerves, I made the choice to do it anyway.  I took the next step and picked up the phone.

To date, I’ve interviewed almost 60 celebrities!  It’s been an amazing and wonderful experience, and is opening doors for me that I would have never have been there if I hadn’t gathered the courage to try.

The Real Dr Doolittle Show has had almost 100,000 hits/downloads, and I get emails almost every day from listeners telling me what a difference listening to the Show made for them.

That would never have happened if I’d waited until I was ready, or felt comfortable or 100% prepared.

What is your soul’s work?  What makes you afraid, maybe even terrified, but is something you know you want to do with your whole heart?

If part of your soul’s work is learning how to hear your animal’s voices, and you haven’t yet acted on your heart’s desire, then don’t wait for another opportunity to get started.  Do it before you’re ready.

Your animal’s life is ticking away, and yours is too… how much longer will you wait before they can tell you what is weighing on their heart?

November’s Animal Communication System Virtual Retreat is designed to give you exactly what you need in one weekend, so that you can blow the lid off your world and relationships and leap out of the box into the wonderful and amazing world of animal communication.

If I could give you one gift, it would be this:

Follow your heart’s passion and guidance, and start things before you’re ready.

Remember that your ego mind can’t help you in the matter of starting that which your heart knows is your path.  It’s very good at coming up with countless reasons, excuses and doubts about why you shouldn’t do something.

Did you know that your resistance to doing your soul’s work is actually a signal that you are on the right path?

My guest this week on The Real Dr Doolittle Show is Robby Hartley and Thelma the Guide Dog.  He had a dream and was guided to help disabled people live better lives through the magic of Therapy and Guide Dogs.  His and Thelma’s story will touch your heart and help you see the gift our animals truly are.

Wishing you and your furrkids much love,

Val

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something…The reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people.”  Steve Jobs,  Wired Magazine, 1996

I know I have, many times.  What I’ve learned is this:

It’s okay to start projects that I don’t feel totally ready for.  Stretching myself to reach outside my comfort zone is critically important to my growth and journey, and is a big part of my mission and purpose.

The process teaches me how to fail, how to make mistakes, and not to be afraid to go for what I really want and feel Guided to do.

Mistakes are what we do, we’re human.  It’s how we go about fixing them that matters… and what we learn from them that can make all the difference.

I’m a Seeker, a Pioneer, and sometimes I’m outstanding in my field.  Most all of the projects I’ve taken on have scared me silly… but I did them anyway.

For instance, when I first started interviewing celebrities, I didn’t have any idea what I was doing.  But I had a dream, a vision and a hope that I could do it.

Nobody gave me permission… I didn’t receive an invitation… Honestly, I was terrified to put myself out there – it felt like a beginning trapeze artist without a net.

I recently had a dream that I could teach animal lovers all over the world how to communicate with animals in ONE weekend in a virtual retreat.  To my knowledge, that’s never been done before.

It wasn’t easy, I had to figure out how to use brand new technology and procedures, develop new coursework from this unique perspective, and determine how to provide a rich learning environment so students could learn what they most wanted and needed to know in the time we had…

I’m delighted to report that I accomplished all that and much more in October’s Animal Communication System Virtual Retreat!

The students had a great experience – one student from Italy even used the word phenomenal!

They told me they were blown away by the richness and depth of the material, how quickly they progressed from complete newbies to having remarkable conversations with animals, and how many wonderful goodies and golden nuggets they took away.

Many had even taken other workshops and gone away disappointed… I’m so proud of them for giving themselves and their dreams another chance.

I can hardly wait until November’s Retreat – so if you missed it, and you know that learning animal communication is part of your soul’s work, then you have another chance to attend.

If I could give you one gift, it would be this:

Follow your heart’s passion and guidance, and start things before you’re ready.

Steve Jobs did, and he changed the world in dramatic, fundamental ways.  So have countless others.  They started before they were ready too.

And you can too.  Don’t worry about being perfect – perfect is highly overrated, plus it’s rather boring because there’s no risk.

Your ego mind can’t help you in the matter of starting that which your heart knows is your path.  It’s very good at coming up with countless reasons, excuses and doubts about why you shouldn’t do something.

Did you know that your resistance to doing your soul’s work is actually a signal that you are on the right path?

In the words of one of my treasured teachers, Bill Baren:

“If there’s no resistance to the work, then you’re often skirting around the periphery of your work.  Resistance is the friend that arrives when we’ve hit the bulls-eye.  Procrastination, avoidance and excuse-making is simply part of the territory.”

My guest this week on The Real Dr Doolittle Show is Master Rolfer, Briah Anson.  She had a dream and was guided to help heal animals through the power of her touch.

“Whatever you want to do, begin it.  Boldness has genius, magic and power in it.” – Goethe

Wishing you and your furrkids much love,

Val

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~ Steve Jobs
