My cat definitely knows what he likes to be called - he has allowed us to have 2 different names for him, not the 4 that we really wanted! He's such a character.

Thanks Val,

What a lovely story! I had no idea that this communication, which appears to be "real," can really happen. I guess I am not "that" perceptive; it takes a special sensitivity.
We once had a dog called Penny, short of "Penelope." I have no idea if she was in agreement with that name, but she was a wonderful dog and understood much more then I gave her credit for at the time. She was great with our children and when I parked her near my smallest, she knew she must guard the baby; and she did! In her very old age she understood when I drove with her to the vet that this was to be her last trip to that hated place. She put her head on my driving leg in submission. She knew ....., Penny knew, and I suppose she agreed.
We've not had an animal since. She was a magnificent dog.

I had no idea I was going to reply to this post, but "Penny" just begged me to do it.

This is sooo true! In fact, this is one of the stories I tell in my book, "Life to the Max: Maxims for a Great Life by a Dog named Max" (with translation from Mom, of course)! When I was rescued by my forever family, my name was "Scoochies," but my mom figured out that my real name was "Max." Check out my book at
