Personal Note from Val:  Having had 6 eye surgeries inNew Pic Val recent years, I know intimately how important our vision really is. It is especially important for service animals, whether they are dogs, cats, donkeys or horses.  If they can’t see, then they can’t perform their job!  However, it can sometimes be hard to know for sure if your animal is suffering from poor vision or losing their vision.  Listen now so you’ll know what signs to look for.  And if you have a service animal, or know someone who does, be SURE they know about this critically important annual event so they can participate.  If they apply during the month of April, they can receive FREE Eye Exams for their animals during the month of May from participating veterinarian ophthalmologists in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

<><><><><><><><>

Ben the disaster search and rescue dogGuide dogs, detection dogs, search and rescue dogs, therapy dogs and dogs assisting people with disabilities selflessly serve the public. To honor these animals and their work, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) is launching the 6th Annual ACVO®/Merial® National Service Dog Eye Exam Event to provide free, sight-saving eye exams to service animals during the month of May. More than 250 board certified veterinary ophthalmologists throughout the U.S., as well as Canada and Puerto Rico, are donating their time and resources to screen thousands of eligible service animals.  Service animal applicants must register during April for the event, which has provided free exams to more than 16,000 services animals since its launch in 2008.

For instance, Ben is a black American Field Labrador who can climb a three story ladder, unassisted. Ben’s eyesight is vital to his job. He is a search and rescue dog from Ventura, CA that can be called upon at any time to rescue someone who is alive, during a disaster. Ben’s handler, Eric Darling, has brought Ben to participate in the ACVO®/Merial® National Service Dog Eye Exam Event for two years in a row.  Eric and Dr. Nancy Bromberg, a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist, are here to talk about this exciting and important event.

These questions among others were asked and we learned a lot and so will you:

  • How did you get involved in the ACVO/Merial Annual Service Dog Eye Exam Event?
  • How many service animals have been helped to date?
  • Who participates in the event?
  • Why are eye exams so important?
  • What types of issues, problems or diseases are typically detected during the exams?

To find out more information and how to register for the event go to www.ACVOeyeexam.org

Personal Note from Val:  I truly found a kindred spirit in Allen and Linda.  They believe, as I do, that we should always view our animal companions with respect and appreciation.  Because when you look into the eyes of an animal, what you will discover is a spiritual SOUL that is experiencing this lifetime as your dog, or cat, or horse.  For those of us who have witnessed and been forever blessed by an animal’s love, this if for you!  Enjoy.

<><><><><><><><><><>

In 1996, Allen Anderson and Linda Anderson founded the Angel Animals Network in Minneapolis. Their fourteen books about the spiritual qualities of animals have been featured on Oprah.com, the Today Show, ABC’s Nightly News, BBC Radio, Washington Post, LA Times, Amazon.com’s Hot 100 and B&N’s Top 10.

The Andersons’ 2006 book about animal rescue won the prestigious American Society of Journalists & Authors Outstanding Book Award. They received commendations from the Governor their contributions as an authors to the state of Minnesota. Allen and Linda teach writing at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis and donate a portion of their books’ proceeds to animal welfare.  Today we’re here to talk about their book called A Dog Named Leaf.

Allen shares with us some interesting facts and answers:

  • Why Allen wrote the book with his wife Linda.
  • Allen’s diagnoses of a brain aneurysm that could burst any time and a blood clot aimed at his heart and the miracle of how these two conditions were discovered.
  • How Allen’s dramatic healing journey synchronizes with the adoption of an emotionally scarred dog who also needed to heal.
  • What role did animal communication play in the dual healing journey with Leaf and Allen?
  • How and why Allen and Linda started Angel Animals Network.

You should always view your animal companion with more respect and appreciation and when you look into the eyes of your beloved pet, you will see a SOUL that is experiencing this lifetime as your dog.

A Dog Named Leaf is available at bookstores and online nationwide and in libraries. Read the book with an open mind and heart, and change your life by knowing animals as the spiritual beings they truly are.

Personal Note From Val: Who Knew that Gibbons have such a complex, unique and interesting social structure?  They do! I loved learning about Gibbons.  For instance, they create and sing unique, individual song duets with their mates.  They pair off into love matches and family units, and they resist forced marriages just like we do.  They live long lives, and are even serially monogamous.  And they love to play! Just like me.  Enjoy!

<><><><><><><><><><>

The Gibbon Conservation Center (GCC) was established in 1976 by Alan Mootnick.  It houses the rarest group of apes in the Western Hemisphere and has successfully reproduced 7 Gibbon species.  The GCC functions as an international consultant to zoos, museums, government agencies such as the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and individual scientists on species identification and Gibbon care.  They have assisted Gibbon rescue programs in Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The goals of the GCC are to help ensure the survival, conservation and propagation of all Gibbon species in the wild and in captivity.  To provide a captive haven for all gibbon species as a complement to protecting them in the wild. To educate the public and add to the knowledge on Gibbons for the scientific community, rehabilitation centers, and zoos and to support ongoing field conservation projects.

To date, seven of 17 gibbon species that have been housed at GCC have produced offspring. Successful breeding programs are crucial because if rainforests throughout Asia disappear, captive populations will be the only remnants of the Gibbon species.  The GCC houses nearly 40 Gibbons, which is the second largest group of Gibbons outside their countries of origin. The comfort and well being of these primates is their primary concern.

In November 2011, Alan Mootnick, the GCC founder died suddenly.  However, the work at the Center continues.  As spokespersons for the Center, our guests today Gabriella Skollar-Charnofsky and Neta Ambar have realized that life is unpredictable.  They decided that if they wanted to do something important in their lives, they had to start today.  Alan inspired them so deeply that they want to follow his footsteps and have dedicated their lives to studying and protecting gibbons, and to teach people about them.

In this interview some of the things you will learn about are:

  • Who was Alan Mootnich, and why did he start the Center?
  • How does the Gibbons complex social and family structure work?
  • What a day is like at the Center?
  • How did Gabriella and Neta become involved?
  • What is the Gibbon, and why are they endangered?

How can you get involved too?  You can make a difference in many different ways. You can volunteer at organizations that help Gibbons, you can contribute to organizations like the Gibbon Conservation Center.

You can also make changes in your life by avoiding purchasing palm oil products which contribute to deforestation and loss of natural habitats for the Gibbons and other species.

The Gibbon Conservation Center is a 501 (c) 3 organization.  All contributions are tax deductible as provided by law. Our federal tax exemption number is 95-4256306. 100% of all contributions go directly to the care of Gibbons, including on-site care, education, and world-wide conservation efforts.

Google them or connect with the GCC on Facebook.  Be sure to tell them you heard their interview on The Real Dr Doolittle Show:  www.facebook.com/gibbonconservationcenter

Personal Note from Val: I had a blast interviewing author, Gayle Pruitt!  Get your pen and paper ready because if you’re like me and have a doggie companion at your feet, you’re going to get a wealth of great tips about providing nutritious meals for dogs.  Gayle makes things super simple, clear and very easy to follow.  With the help of Chef Mimi and Mister Casper, she’s written the book, Dog-Gone Good Cookbook based on her years of nutritional research for humans and dogs. Here you go, puppies and doggie guardians this one’s for YOU! Enjoy!

<><><><><><><><><><><>

Gayle Pruitt has been a nutritionist/ chef for fifteen years, earning her Certified Nutritionist degree from the American Health Science University’s National Institute of Nutritional Education/NINE in 1996.

Gayle conducts nutritional research where at present she focuses on human and canine nutrition with a specialty in digestive issues and disorders and also acts as a guest lecturer.

Gayle was Executive Chef for MacNut Oil, a gourmet cooking oil company. She has worked as a Personal Chef, and owned and operated Fine Food Delivered, preparing and delivering unique meals for those with special dietary needs.

Gayle also co-hosted a nationally syndicated radio talk show, Menu for Life Radio Show, with Dr. Ross Stewart, a behavioral psychologist and recognized expert on the link between nutrition and brain chemistry.

Gayle’s recipes have appeared in national magazines and in best-selling cookbooks such as Hampton’s Diet Cookbook and 7-Color Cuisine: A Cookbook and Nutrition Guide.  She was the food writer for a Dallas based magazine Lifestyle Solutions.

In addition, she has conducted cooking demonstrations in many cities across the county for national food shows involving gourmet products. And she’s been asked to film a pilot for a new show on cooking for dogs too that may easily wind up on one of the Food Networks (can’t say which one yet).

Gayle is the author of  The Dog-Gone Good Cookbook published by St Martin’s Press and scheduled for release in February of 2013.

Gayle has some loving furrkids who have guided her along the way as well.

Mister Casper, the Furry Gourmand

Mister Casper was found in an alley as a young pup by a group of hooligans who immediately tossed him into a large garbage bin. Fortunately for the young Mister Casper it was the garbage bin in the back of the finest French Restaurant in all of Dallas. That night of all nights, the restaurant,  Charmante Cuisine Chien, had a huge banquet and Mister Casper was the recipient of some marvelous morsels. This glorious garbage bin episode marked the beginning of Mister Casper’s brilliant career as the “Furry Gourmand.”

Not long after Mister Casper decided he would live in the fabulous Poubelle  forever and ever, a person passing by thought she heard a moaning sound coming out of the garbage bin. Wondering if the sound might be caused by an animal that was hurt, she peered inside and found Mister Casper merely groaning with gastronomic pleasure. That someone was Gayle Pruitt. She took Mister Casper home with her where he currently helps write food blogs and reviews, and he is now considered one of the top Canine Food Critics in the country.

Chef Mimi (Me-Me) Pruitt

Chef Mimi started from humble beginnings. Her parentage was mysterious and there was some whispered talk of a magical background. Mimi survived quite well on the streets of Dallas. As a talented, intelligent, and no nonsense canine, Mimi was determined to make something of herself. She worked hard and received a scholarship to the Canine Culinary Arts Institute in Paris, Texas where she started a restaurant.

After her first year as a restaurateur she received a Three “Paw” Mitch-land plus a Rising Paw from the Spot Guide in 2007, a feat never before achieved. Chef Mimi received her Four “Paw” Mitch-land in 2008. That’s when she met Gayle Pruitt, and Mister Casper. She took Gayle under her wing and taught her as much as she was capable of learning.

Chef Mimi has been working with and mentoring Gayle for the last four years and has helped Ms. Pruitt with recipes, most notably the Dog-Gone Good Cookbook being published by St. Martin’s Press. The Cookbook is scheduled for release in February 2013.

In our interview, Gayle answered these questions and more:

  • What inspired your idea to write the Dog-Gone Good Cookbook?
  • Is there any research on canines eating vegetables?
  • Why did you include cooked, raw and even vegetarian food in your cookbook for dogs?
  • Why is it important for canines to have organic fruits & vegetables and grass-fed meats in their diet?
  • Do you have an easy, simple way for the people that think they don’t have time to prepare homemade food for their dogs to get started?

Note From Val:  Speaking with THE famous Dr Harvey was a real treat!  His products and miracle food helped me with my very ill dog, Einstein, who also was suffering from a compromised kidney (our vet called it terminal failure, but we’re delighted to report that he was wrong!).  Einstein is now well and very healthy.  We follow the protocol Dr Harvey teaches about.  And, in my private work, I often find myself working with sick animals on the same topics too. Listen and find out why you should never feed kibble or canned commercial dog food, and how easy it really is to feed your animal companion a healthy, nutritious diet.  Enjoy!

<><><><><><><><><>

Dr. Harvey Cohen (known as Dr. Harvey) is a pioneer in holistic and natural nutrition for animals.  He is a physician with a deep love for animals and a profound interest in discovering how to keep them healthy.

Distressed by the increase in cancer, obesity and other degenerative chronic ailments in animals, he has successfully treated these conditions through proper diet and nutrition.  Dr Harvey believes that foods for animals should not contain preservatives dyes, coloring agents, fillers and artificial ingredients, so he began creating products for animals that contain only human consumption grade ingredients.  Thousands of Dr. Harvey’s clients have seen the amazing benefits of feeding animals naturally.

He is the founder of Dr. Harvey’s Healthy Formulations, makers of the world’s finest all natural health foods, treats, herbal grooming products and herbal supplements for dogs, cats, birds, and horses.  He is an herbalist and nutritional expert for companion animals.

Lauren Michele McGarry is the founder of Red Horse Equine Arts.  She fell in love of horses at the tender age of 12.  In her career, she has managed many horse breeding farms.  Many of the young horses she’s trained have gone on to enjoy very successful, strong “show” careers earning money prizes in both Reining, Western Pleasure, Hunter-Under-Saddle & Jumping.

Unfortunately, Lauren Michele also witnessed inhumane & unproductive treatment of horses in the name of training. So she began to explore what we now call “Natural Horsemanship”.

She spent many years studying and being licensed in holistic health care as well as Somatic Psychology at Naropa University.  And from that, she developed a unique philosophy and education in the Art of Horsemanship.  Her goal is for riding to become a rewarding experience for the horse and the rider, a path of wisdom & discovery.

She believes that her approach to horsemanship, Yoga & Movement for Equestrians, is an essential piece that helps bring balance and harmony to the relationship between horse & human.

Besides managing the holistic equine training center Lauren Michele is a clinician and teacher, barefoot trimmer & consultant for horses & their people.  She is also a co-founder of the Holistic Horse Care Cooperative, now an international organization dedicated to honoring the horse & supporting holistic horse care practitioners of all types.

Lauren answers some questions we would all love to know:

How are yoga & movement practices related to horses?

  • How are yoga & movement practices related to horses?
  • How do the horses respond to someone doing yoga?
  • What is the first thing someone needs to learn about yoga and horses?
  • What programs do you have available for people?
  • What was your background in horses and yoga & why did you unite the two?

You can find out more about her work at:  www.redhorsecenter.com

Amanda Martin, the first UK approved The Click That Teaches Instructor, trained by Alexandra Kurland, has been training horses since the early 2000s and has been teaching since the mid 2000s.

Shortly after buying her first stallion Amanda came across clicker training and immediately recognised that this would be a fantastic way to train her stallion. She headed out to the barn with The Click That Teaches book, a clicker in hand and a pocket full of treats and made some wonderful discoveries. She discovered that clicker training is incredibly powerful, that it is an effective communication tool for horses and handlers, and that the horses responded with great enthusiasm.

Now thanks to Amanda, and The Click That Teaches program, horse owners all over the UK and EU/Europe are able to build a solid relationship with their horse where the horse is a willing and enthusiastic partner in the training. Through clinics, lessons and online training courses she is helping horse owners everywhere discover that clicker training can help them create happy, eager horses who love to train. As a result she is also creating very happy horse owners who love spending time with their horses.

Amanda also teaches clicker training at universities and colleges throughout the UK and is also a faculty member for the Equine Clicker Conference in the UK.

Amanda answers some very important questions:

· What is Clicker Training, and who is Alexander Kurland?

· Does the clicker method work for all horses?

· Clicker training was still considered to be relatively new when you first began learning it. Have things changed in horse training since then?

· Is the clicker good for all aspects of a horses training?

· Is there a limit to what a horse can be taught through clicker training?

Everyone loves their horse, and that means we want to have a great relationship with our horse. At the S.M.A.A.R.T. Horse Company we aim to help you build that relationship. To help build that relationship it’s important to be training for emotional changes in our horses just as much as behavioural changes. We can change behaviour but that does not mean the horse has shifted how they feel emotionally about performing behaviour.

To learn more about Amanda and about the Clicker Training for Horses contact her via email at info@smaarthorses.co.uk or call her at 0777 196 5083.

From Val:  I first met Penny Stone at a Linda Tellington Jones Ttouch event at a wonderful equine therapy center in Dallas, TX. A gifted and talented horsewoman, she became my animal communication student, AND, I have taken horseback riding lessons with her. We’ve also experienced the joy of seeing major changes with many horses, dogs and cats by combining Ttouch and Tteam techniques along with the power of animal communication. Her new book is brilliant, inspired and powerful. You’ll have a good time listening into this fireside chat style interview, while we share our hearts — and our journeys — with you and your furrkids. Enjoy!

<><><><><><><><><><><>

Penny Stone has been training and caring for animals her whole life. As a child she was always bringing home sick animals and strays. As a young woman she spent time as a dog trainer, a small animal vet technician and as the education coordinator for the humane society. In 1980 she graduated from Merideth Manor International School of Horsemanship and began her career as an equine professional. She began studying with internationally renowned author and horsewoman, Linda Tellington Jones, and became a Ttouch and TTEAM practitioner. All her interactions with animals emphasize understanding, communication, and relationship.

Penny has written many articles, and most recently published her first book Uncommonly Good Horse Sense, about how to understand and interact with animals with compassion and kindness to be their leader. Although horses are the subject of the book, readers say the insights apply to all the creatures in their lives “ including humans!”

Penny also does Body Balancing for horses. Her methods utilize several bodywork techniques, Cold Laser, Lifewave Technology and integrative movement to improve the horse’s comfort, body awareness, balance and movement – and subsequently enhance their performance.

Penny answers some thought provoking questions:

· How did you get involved with horses?

· Who is Linda Tellington Jones and what is Ttouch and Tteam?

· What do you mean by the phrase, “Whole Horsemanship”?

· What is the difference between dominance and leadership in horse training (and dog training)?

· How do we recognize and understand the benefits of oneness over superiority?
