Horses in Field

Every pet lover, caretaker and owner needs this great information at hand when they need it because we love our animals. We want them to be healthy and happy. We also know that there are too many things that can go wrong for them in sudden, tragic ways. We never want to feel powerless when our animal friend is faced with an emergency or is just not feeling well.

Being prepared to handle things properly, and knowing what to look out for can make all the difference in a life or death situation.

Don't let a tragedy happen to your friend and you not be prepared or know what to do.
The saddest consultations are the ones where the owners simply didn't have a clue that they were contributing to their animal’s poor health and pending death. It is a sad thing when it is necessary to counsel people who are grieving with a broken heart over something they could have avoided -- had they only known what to do. That kind of guilt can be very hard to heal from.

Overall, we have a pretty unhealthy population of dogs and cats. Certain diseases are rampant, occurring at younger and younger ages. Such as:

  • Chronic itching, scratching...allergies
  • Degenerative arthritis
  • Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea
  • unresolved ear infections
  • Urinary tract disease
  • And the most pressing disease of our time...Cancer.
  • Knowing that feeding your animals correctly and learning good basic home animal care can help reduce or eliminate these health issues without the expensive vet bills that can pile up!

In addition to disease management you also need to be prepared to recognize and deal with any pain issues. Watch for these signs of pain:

  • Your pet may tire easily or lag behind
  • Your pet may be stiff or limp after exercise
  • Your pet is reluctant to jump up
  • Your pet is slow to rise after lying down
  • Excessive licking of joints
  • Whimpering or moaning - especially when certain areas are touched.
  • Your pet may be withdrawn or sleeping longer
  • Cats will often hide
  • Breathing rapidly or panting
  • Acting agitated
  • Refusing to eat
  • Become aggressive
  • Stand with the back arched

Common causes of pain:

  • Major trauma (fractures)
  • Car accidents
  • Falls
  • Surgery
  • Urinary infections
  • Eye injury, such as ulcers
  • Ear infections
  • Dental disease - gum infections and tooth abscesses
  • Skin infections - such as hot spots
  • Back pain - this is a BIG cause of pain in animals
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort

What can you do if you suspect a pain related issue?

1. Treat the underlying cause.

2. Have a vet exam to determine if there is something not quite so obvious going on.

3. You can give your animal friend Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories (NSAIDS) such as asprin, Rimadyl or Metacam. None of these are safe for cats, and the long term use of any of them can have serious side effects (liver and kidney disease, vomiting or diarrhea). They are best used as a last resort and at the lowest effective dose.

4. Alternative pain control, such as: supplements like glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, essential fatty acids, herbal pain relief like devils claw, willow and yucca, homeopathics such as arnica and rhus tox and/or massage or acupressure.
